Autos rule the roads in Chennai

I have been to Chennai this week on official work. I had to travel a lot in Chennai during this trip. I had to resort to autos for transport. For those who haven't visited Chennai before, you will have to depend on the whims and fancies of the autowalla when you use them.

The autowallas will quote some random fare to reach the destination. These prices are usually some nice round numbers like 100, 150, 200 etc. You either take it or leave it.
The meters on these autos are just for decoration. Donot commit the cardinal sin of insisting on the use of meter. You will end up paying more than what he quoted.

I can only hope to live to see pre-paid autos with reasonable rates in Chennai.

Pre paid autos are there in Chennai too. But the counter is in Chennai Central alone. Lets hope they will extend to other places also soon.

Well.. I had this interesting experience trying to avail the pre-paid auto facility at Central. There is this counter which gives you the token for pre-paid auto, but, not a single auto-wallah respects the token. In-fact you won't find anyone ready to take you at the auto queue. I had to go to great lengths of trying to threaten them by acting to call police, etc. to get a pre-paid autowallah come for the token amount + Rs 5.
